Sound Terminology

Non-Diegetic


Title Music: The theme tune of the programe usually at the start of the program.
Incidental Music: Orchestral music used to create suspense and atmosphere.
Sound Motifs: Sound, when played, reminds the audience of a certain character.
Sound Effects: Effects used to inhance the sound of a certain scene.
Voice Over: Used to give the viewer an insight to the character speaking.

Diegetic


Synchronous Sound: Sounds that match what you are seeing.
Sound Effects: Effects used to enhance the sound of a certain scene.
Dialogue: Characters speaking on screen.
Ambient Sound: Natural sound you would hear in any certain scene.







Mise-En-Scene



Mise-En-Scene is the arrangement of props, costume, scenery and characters.

Common conventions

Costume
Before being caught there is a lot of casual outfits usually darker colours and after is the jumpsuits and more prison type clothes.

Props
Guns, knives, evidence, money, handcuffs These are some of the more common props for the crime genre





Lighting and Settings

Darker lighting is more common in the crime drama to seem more mysterious and to help build tension.  Especially in a prison, police station, crime scene or morgue the brightest part would be the courtroom.
